Like other insurance claims, life insurance companies will search for ways to avoid paying claims rather than find a way to pay the claim.  This is so especially when the policy was issued shortly before the death of the insured, if the cause of death is unusual or if the cause of death can be construed as a suicide.

The insurance company may choose not to pay the proper amount benefits.  For example, does the policy call for payment of additional benefits in the event of an accidental death?  Has this payment been made?  The insurance company will not always characterize the cause of death as an accident.  In some cases a heart attack has been held to be an accident.

You can also buy disability insurance individually.  If you have purchased individual disability insurance, you may not need to appeal the denial.  However, it is important to gather together all of the evidence that supports your claim so that the denial may be properly evaluated.
